PRATTVILLE – As Class 6A, Area 5 play began for the Thompson Warriors, it provided them a chance to back up their strong start to the season with a win in one of their most meaningful matches of the season.
They backed it up and then some, leaving no doubt on the road.
Thompson swept the now-23-4 Prattville Lions on Thursday, Sept. 17 at Prattville High School.
The defending area champion Warriors came in off a nailbiter of a five-set win over Montgomery Academy on Tuesday, but this win required much less theatrics.
Thompson grabbed hold of the match in the early points of the first set and didn't let go of the lead down the stretch. That helped the Warriors win the first set by a score of 25-15 and only set the stage for more to come.
After that, Thompson regained its wide advantage over Prattville and pulled away for another victory in the second set. The Warriors would claim the second set in 25-14 fashion, and in the process, put them one set win away from taking the match.
Thompson saved its most dominant performance for last. The Warriors made short work of the Lions in the third set, cruising to a commanding lead before finishing off the sweep. Thompson's 25-11 win in the third set polished off the straight-set win and gave the Warriors a crucial area win on the road.
Thompson improved to 15-7 overall and 1-0 in area play. The Warriors will play the second of their three area matches at home on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. against the Spain Park Jaguars.
