It was Thompson's first playoff game away from Alabaster or Hoover since 2006 and the
Warriors played like they were right at home as they defeated Auburn 34-21 at Duck
Samford Stadium on Friday night.
Auburn came in as the #1 team in the final ASWA poll and were the top seed from
region 2. The Tigers were the only unbeaten team in 7A but suffered a season ending
first loss against the Warriors. Auburn and Thompson have only met three times, and
the Warriors are now 3-0 in those meetings.
The game started off as a back-and-forth defensive showdown between the two teams
as the first quarter ended 0-0. However, a special teams mistake early in the second
quarter by Auburn with a muffed punt at the 42-yard line gave Thompson the
momentum to finally put the ball in the endzone. After a few plays,
Trent Seaborn found
Darion Moseley from 19-yards out to break the deadlock and go up 7-0.
Thompson was able to stop Auburn after that and get the ball back where Seaborn
found
Dedrick Kimbrough for 72 yards on the second play of the series to go up 14-0,
which is where the score would wind up at the half.
Auburn finally scored to open the second half with a march down the field over four
minutes to make it 14-7 Thompson. However, on the ensuing Thompson drive, Trent
Seaborn would have the play of the game on a scramble of 73 yards down the field to
the 4-yard line which would set up an
RJ Evans touchdown on the next play go up 21-7.
Thompson would score again on a long drive thanks to a
Michael Dujon touchdown to
go up 28-7. Auburn wouldn't give up and scored a touchdown late to make it 28-14
before Thompson answered again to make it 34-14 before Auburn scored in the final
minute to make the final score 34-21.
Seaborn finished 19/23 on the night for 205 yards and two touchdowns. He also added
another 69 yards on the ground.
Michael Dujon had 12 carries for 71 yards and two
touchdowns while
RJ Evans added another 35 yards and a touchdown. Kimbrough led
all receivers with four catches for 91 yards and a score while
Darion Moseley had seven
catches for 42 yards and a touchdown.
On defense,
Kevin Davis,
Payton Lewis and
Peter Ramil all led with 9 tackles in the
game, with Ramil also getting two tackles for loss. Davis, Ramil,
Cam Pritchett, Anquon
Fegans and
Damonte Tabb all recorded tackles for loss with Pritchett earning a sack.
Tabb had an interception and Lewis had a fumble recovery.
With the win, Thompson advances to the semi-finals and is one step away from the
Super 7. The Warriors have not lost a road playoff game since 2002 when they lost 35-
29 at Benjamin Russell and have advanced to the semifinals for the eighth straight year.
Thompson will face Enterprise at Warrior Stadium on Friday, November 22. Enterprise
enters as the 4-seed from Region 2, with only one common opponent - losing to Auburn
53-22 back on September 13. Enterprise defeated Region 4 champion Austin 32-21 in
the first round and Region 1 runner-up Baker 30-14 in the second round.
The winner of this week's game will face the winner of Hoover and Central-Phenix City
in the state championship.
