Thompson dispatches Mountain Brook in straight sets, bounces back from Vestavia Hills loss

ALABASTER – The Thompson Warriors started off the week on a losing note, dropping a five-set match to the Vestavia Hills Rebels on the road on Wednesday, Sept 3 in a battle of former area foes.  However, just a day later, Thompson took on a perennial Class 6A contender and emerged with a bounce-back victory.  The Warriors defeated the Mountain Brook Spartans 3-1 on Thursday, Sept. 4 at Warrior Arena to get back to winning ways.  The two teams were tightly matched during the opening set, going at each other in a close battle in the closing points of the set.  After a 24-24 tie, the two teams went to extra points to decide a winner. Thompson and Mountain Brook split the next two points before the Warriors grabbed control of the match by winning the next two points.  Thompson took the first set by a score of 27-25, and that opened the floodgates for the Warriors to start rolling on the attack.  With a first-set victory in its pocket, Thompson built up a larger lead in the second set, grew it to double digits and rolled from there.  The Warriors used their commanding lead to secure the 25-14 win in the second set, increasing their match lead to 2-0 and putting them on the cusp of securing the victory.  Mountain Brook made it closer in the third set, but it couldn't get quite as close as it did in the first set as Thompson used all of its momentum to avoid a third-set slump and finish off the win.  In the end, the Warriors took the match victory thanks to a 25-20 win in the third set, securing the sweep in the process.  Thompson improved to 6-4 overall with the win to prep itself for a busy week to come.
