It was a fast start for Vestavia and slow start for Thompson as the Warriors began their third
region game of the season. However, the Thompson defense was able to score three different
times to put the game away late 38-17.
After the Rebels won the toss and elected to defer to the second half, they then kicked a
successful onsides kick to start with the ball anyway. Vestavia marched down the field and
scored to go up 7-0. After a three-and-out from Thompson, Vestavia drove down again but had
to settle for a field goal to go up 10-0.
The Warriors' run game started picking up steam after a
Payton Lewis nabbed an interception,
with
Michael Dujon busting free for a 41-yard touchdown to get the Warriors on the board. The
very next Vestavia drive ended in Jared Smith reading a screen pass to perfection and grabbing
an interception which he returned for a touchdown to put the Warriors up 14-10 after the first.
Vestavia answered in the second quarter to make the score 17-14 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Vestavia put together a long drive on their first possession that ended with
an
Anquon Fegans interception to give the ball back to Thompson. Thompson would go on to
score 24 unanswered points in the form of a
RJ Evans touchdown run, an
Anquon Fegans rip
and return 94-yards the other direction, a pick-6 from
Micah Fleming and a 33-yard field goal
from John Alan McGuire as the cherry on top.
Despite being outgained by Vestavia's offense, Thompson's defense ended up with five total
turnovers, with three of them going for six points. Thompson's offense only ended up with 33
offensive snaps and 253 total yards, but Dujon had an impressive night with 15 carries for 187
yards, pushing him to 552 yards on the season and seven total touchdowns.
Thompson improves to 4-1 on the season overall and 3-0 in Region 3 play, currently tied for first
with Hoover. The team is back at Warrior Stadium on Friday, September 27 as they host
unbeaten defending 6A champion Clay-Chalkville in a non-region game.
