ALABASTER – After falling short to the Prattville Lions a season ago in the area title race, the Thompson Warriors got their revenge with a championship in 2026, doing something no team in boys soccer program history had ever accomplished.
Thompson defeated Prattville 3-0 on Thursday, April 16 at Warrior Stadium to finish atop Class 7A, Area 5, securing the first area title in program history.
The win means the Warriors will host a first-round game in the Class 7A playoffs alongside the girls, who also finished 6-0 in area play with a 10-0 thrashing of the Lions earlier in the night.
For the boys, Thompson got going in the 16th minute when Aram Arreola scored off a Dylan Huerta assist, continuing their prolific connection to put the hosts up 1-0.
The Warriors were full steam ahead from there and doubled up their lead just before the halftime interval. Huerta went to work again in the 39th minute when he passed to Joel Torres for Thompson's second goal.
Thompson kept attacking in the second half and got an insurance goal. Arreola dished to Alex Venzor in the 62nd minute, and Venzor finished off the chance for the 3-0 lead.
The Warriors saw out the shutout from there to sweep the season series and finish area play 6-0 for a title.
Arreola finished with a goal and an assist, Huerta had two assists and Venzor and Torres each finished with a goal.
The girls improved on their 8-0 win on the road at Prattville on March 12 with an even more dominant performance to cap their undefeated run through area play.
Thompson scored five goals in the first half to immediately take control and enter halftime with a 5-0 lead. From there, the Warriors continued piling on goals while limiting Prattville's chances. That led to five more goals and a mercy-rule victory for Thompson.
Luna Montiel-Duenas led the Warriors offense once again, this time scoring six goals and adding three assists to contribute to all but one of their 10 goals. Charli Gantt finished with two goals and an assist, and Lynsey Schlup and Julia Stanton each had a goal in the win.
Gigi Seaborn joined Montiel-Duenas on three assists for the night, and Mary Webb Mazingo, Jillian Howanitz and Mary Martinez each secured an assist.
The No. 3-ranked Thompson boys are 15-3-3 while the No. 7 girls are 14-6-3. Both teams will finish the regular season on Tuesday, April 21 against the Auburn High School Tigers, with the girls set for an in-school game at 2 p.m. before the boys kick off at 4 p.m. at Warrior Stadium.
